We are all taught from an early age to take care of our teeth – brush twice a day, floss often, go to the dentist every six months and make sure we get that extra fluoride treatment! And if for some reason, we don’t get our healthy dose of fluoride from the twice daily brushings of fluoride toothpaste, or from the twice yearly regular dental visits, the government REALLY wants to make sure that the American population doesn’t get those dreadful  cavities by putting fluoride into our drinking water. HOW THOUGHTFUL!

My curiousity on fluoride began when I would buy baby toothpaste for my then 1 year old daughter. I always made sure to get her the organic, all natural kind. But even the non-organic brands were always “fluoride free” claiming to be “safe to swallow”.  Babies don’t know how to spit out the toothpaste, so it’s obviously bad for them to injest the fluoride. That’s weird. I was pretty sure my town’s water contained “fluoride enrichment”.

I began to do research….FLUORIDE! Grrr…even the name itself sounds evil and disastrous. Where to begin?

Well, I suppose I’ll just point you in the right direction. Instead of hearing my opinion on an issue, check out some of the resources I’ve looked at as well as some you come across on your own search. But don’t be ignorant and look away from an issue that is really trying too hard to fly under the radar. It’s all very sketchy and I don’t like it. What do you think?

One of the best resources I found on the issue is actually an article written on a personal blog – “What’s the Deal With Fluoride?” by Steve Pavlina

He breaks it all down and really covers it all. But here’s a taste:

“Although it is a natural substance, fluoride is highly toxic to human beings, even more so than lead. If you were to injest a mere 2-5 grams of sodium fluoride (a common ingredient in toothpaste), you would probably die. The amount of fluoride in a typical tube of fluoride toothpaste is sufficient to kill a small child if it were consumed all at once. Fluoride toothpaste contains a much higher concentration of fluoride than what is found in nature.”

Is fluoride necessary for health?

Not remotely. Unlike calcium or magnesium, fluoride is not an essential nutrient for your body. If you were to consume zero fluoride your entire life, you wouldn’t suffer for it. There’s no such thing as fluoride deficiency.

What is fluoride’s purported role in tooth decay?

Fluoride acts as an enzyme inhibitor. For this reason it is believed to help prevent cavities by literally poisoning the bacteria in your mouth. Unfortunately, because fluoride is so toxic, you’re taking a big risk by using it to try to prevent cavities. You not only poison the bacteria in your mouth but your other cells as well.

What are the risks of fluoride consumption?

Aside from the risk of death, fluoride can cause serious problems even at low levels of injestion that come from using toothpaste or mouthwash or drinking fluoridated water.

One risk is a condition known as fluorosis, caused by excessive exposure to fluoride. This comes in two kinds: dental fluorosis and skeletal fluorosis. Dental fluorosis occurs at a young age, and the main symptom is discolored and/or pitted teeth, but the outward signs on the teeth are believed to be linked with a deeper neurological impairment.

Drinking fluoridated water is linked with reduced cognitive ability in children. There are also over 30 animal studies showing that fluoride is a neurotoxin which reduces learning and memory. Essentially, fluoride makes you a bit less intelligent.

Why did people start adding fluoride to toothpaste and water?

You don’t want to know. Really you don’t.

But if you do, you can start by reading these articles:
Industry and Fluoridation
Fluoride, Teeth, and the Atomic Bomb

And if you really want to hurt yourself, you can read all about the fluoride fraud here:
Suppression of Scientific Dissent on Fluoride’s Risks and Benefits

If you don’t want to read the above, the bottom line is that fluoride is an industrial pollutant which became a serious problem several decades ago, and this problem was essentially solved by devising ways to feed the stuff to humans. Today it’s become a difficult issue that involves big business, large sums of money, the ADA, the FDA, and somewhere near the bottom of the political food chain… health.

Why then, does the general public believe fluoride is a good thing and a necessary thing? CONDITIONING. We don’t even question it. Why would we even think to bother questioning such a given as fluoride? I bring it up at get-togethers or discuss it over family dinners. But people still continue to use it without thought because of the years and years of conditioning. Or as I like to call it – BRAINWASHING.

I realize this sounds like conspiracy theorizing. But I’ve got to say, with all the valid evidence out there, how can we not question and be totally disgusted with whoever is continuing to perpetuate such mass deception?

Move onto another incredible website — http://www.fluoridealert.org

This is the website for the organization “Fluoride Action Network” or simply “FAN”.  If you go to their “10 Facts about Fluoride” page you will read:

  • Ingestion of fluoride has little benefit, but many risks. Whereas fluoride’s benefits come from topical contact with teeth, its risks to health (which involve many more tissues than the teeth) result from being swallowed.

Adverse effects from fluoride ingestion have been associated with doses atttainable by people living in fluoridated areas. For example:

a) Risk to the brain. According to the National Research Council (NRC), fluoride can damage the brain. Animal studies conducted in the 1990s by EPA scientists found dementia-like effects at the same concentration (1 ppm) used to fluoridate water, while human studies have found adverse effects on IQ at levels as low as 0.9 ppm among children with nutrient deficiencies, and 1.8 ppm among children with adequate nutrient intake. (7-10)“endocrine disrupter.” Most notably, the NRC has warned that doses of fluoride (0.01-0.03 mg/kg/day) achievable by drinking fluoridated water, may reduce the function of the thyroid among individuals with low-iodine intake. Reduction of thyroid activity can lead to loss of mental acuity, depression and weight gain (11)

b) Risk to the thyroid gland. According to the NRC, fluoride is an

c) Risk to bones. According to the NRC, fluoride can diminish bone strength and increase the risk for bone fracture. While the NRC was unable to determine what level of fluoride is safe for bones, it noted that the best available information suggests that fracture risk may be increased at levels as low 1.5 ppm, which is only slightly higher than the concentration (0.7-1.2 ppm) added to water for fluoridation. (12)

d) Risk for bone cancer. Animal and human studies – including a recent study from a team of Harvard scientists – have found a connection between fluoride and a serious form of bone cancer (osteosarcoma) in males under the age of 20. The connection between fluoride and osteosarcoma has been described by the National Toxicology Program as “biologically plausible.” Up to half of adolescents who develop osteosarcoma die within a few years of diagnosis. (13-16)

e) Risk to kidney patients. People with kidney disease have a heightened susceptibility to fluoride toxicity. The heightened risk stems from an impaired ability to excrete fluoride from the body. As a result, toxic levels of fluoride can accumulate in the bones, intensify the toxicity of aluminum build-up, and cause or exacerbate a painful bone disease known as renal osteodystrophy. (17-19)

  • Water fluoridation’s benefits to teeth have been exaggerated. Even proponents of water fluoridation admit that it is not as effective as it was once claimed to be. While proponents still believe in its effectiveness, a growing number of studies strongly question this assessment. (24-46) According to a systematic review published by the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care, “The magnitude of [fluoridation’s] effect is not large in absolute terms, is often not statistically significant and may not be of clinical significance.” (36)

a) No difference exists in tooth decay between fluoridated & unfluoridated countries. While water fluoridation is often credited with causing the reduction in tooth decay that has occurred in the US over the past 50 years, the same reductions in tooth decay have occurred in all western countries, most of which have never added fluoride to their water. The vast majority of western Europe has rejected water fluoridation. Yet, according to comprehensive data from the World Health Organization, their tooth decay rates are just as low, and, in fact, often lower than the tooth decay rates in the US. (25, 35, 44)

b) Cavities do not increase when fluoridation stops. In contrast to earlier findings, five studies published since 2000 have reported no increase in tooth decay in communities which have ended fluoridation. (37-41)

  • Due to other sources, many people are being over-exposed to fluoride . Unlike when water fluoridation first began, Americans are now receiving fluoride from many other sources* besides the water supply. As a result many people are now exceeding the recommended daily intake, putting them at elevated risk of suffering toxic effects. For example, many children ingest more fluoride from toothpaste alone than is considered “optimal” for a full day’s worth of ingestion. According to the Journal of Public Health Dentistry:

“Virtually all authors have noted that some children could ingest more fluoride from [toothpaste] alone than is recommended as a total daily fluoride ingestion.” (52)

Because of the increase in fluoride exposure from all sources combined, the rate of dental fluorosis (a visible indicator of over-exposure to fluoride during childhood) has increased significantly over the past 50 years. Whereas dental fluorosis used to impact less than 10% of children in the 1940s, the latest national survey found that it now affects over 30% of children. (47, 53)

TAKE CONTROL! MAKE A CHANGE!

I highly recommend the Nutriteam Countertop Water Distiller 120V With Glass Collection Container

The Nutriteam website offers many options for various budgets. I purchased the above water distiller because it was the only one on the market with a glass collection container. The reason that using a glass collection container is better than a plastic one is that most of those containers are made with a #7 polybycarbonate plastic containing BPA, a subtance found to be harmful to humans and is a topic which I will visit at a later time. When the plastic is heated, the BPA and other chemicals made to treat the plastic leach into our foods and drinks. Whenever possible, use glass containers and NEVER microwaver with plastic.

I distill my water like I brew a pot of coffee. It’s easy and practically maintence free. I am comforted knowing that I am giving my family the best I can and making sure we expose ourselves to as few toxins as possible. We can’t worry about the things we can’t control, but we can take action and make a difference in our lives and the lives of those we love.

Listen, Learn, Investigate, Speak up. Don’t just accept what others tell you. Find out for yourself and make your own judgements. I’m not here to preach. I just feel compelled to inform. I can only hope that this essay has reached someone and made them think.

Thank you.
